Bristol Family YMCA History

1844
YMCA founded in London, England
1851
YMCA began in Springfield, Massachusetts which was the first YMCA in the United States
1884
YMCA organized in Bristol, Tennessee in a small frame building on Fourth Street with one table and seven benches
1888
First permanent facility erected on Fifth Street
1908
Completed facility on the corner of Fifth Street and Shelby Street -- four story building which included full basement, two bowiling alleys, gymnasium, swimming pool, game room, large recreation room, auditorium and thirty-two dorm rooms
1925
Camp Cherokee was built as a resident camp
1942
Camp Cherokee was closed due to TVA
1968
Completed facility on Edgemont Avenue -- which included men’s health club, locker rooms (for boys, men, girls, and women), three gymnasiums, indoor pool, several classrooms, club meeting rooms, youth lobby and game room, adult lobby, kitchen, fitness room (for exercise, wrestling, boxing), and a chapel
1988
Ladies health service center and instructional pool were added
1999
Renovated fitness room, free weight room, and nursery
1999
Acquired the YMCA Outdoor Center and Tennis Club which gave the YMCA an outdoor sports complex with swimming pools, playground, lighted tennis courts, sand volleyball courts and basketball court.
2004 Renovations of the second floor of the Edgemont Facilities, included new cardio center, cycle room, nursery, Admin offices, and update to the gym and aerobic studio.
