SERVING OUR COMMUNITY FOR OVER 100 YEARS! • YMCA OF BRISTOL

At the Y we believe healthy living has as much to do with pursuing interests, passions, and learning new things as it does with eating healthy and being active. Our minds and spirits need stimulation and enrichment, and we get so much more from life when we find things and people that inspire us.

Seniors

Today, older adults are more health conscious than ever before. That is why the YMCA offers water exercise, variety of land-based exercise classes, volunteer opportunities, and social events. Our senior programs are designed for men and women in their 50s and older to promote fitness and well-being while fostering friendships and camaraderie. Our volunteer opportunities and social events help build lasting relationships and community ties that last a lifetime.

Benefits of Starting an Active Lifestyle Today

Some people may wonder what the difference is between physical activity and exercise. Physical activities are activities that get your body moving such as gardening, walking the dog and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Exercise is a form of physical activity that is specifically planned, structured, and repetitive such as weight training, stretching techniques, or an aerobics class. Including both in your life will provide you with health benefits that can help you feel better and enjoy life more as you age.

  • Exercise reduces risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers.
  • Physical activity helps reduce pain. Keep moving!
  • Exercise helps increase muscular strength, flexibility and balance.
  • Physically activity and exercise help to manage stress and improve your mood.
  • Physical Activity + Exercise = Better quality of life!

Exercise

Come on in, the water's fine! Adults looking to challenge themselves without stress on their joints or members who just enjoy the water can take advantage of our different water exercise classes. Instructors lead small groups through water aerobics, core strengthening and much more. You will gain muscle conditioning and cardiovascular endurance from the aerobic choreography and the resistance of the water. It is ideal for all fitness levels & non-swimmers. Water Exercise classes are FREE for Y members!

At the YMCA we've made the health and fitness of our seniors a priority by providing programs for the spirit, mind and body. Through group exercise classes and aquatic programs that concentrate on mobility and flexibility; social events and volunteer activities to bring seniors together for camaraderie, fellowship and fun. Most senior programs are free for Y members. Refer to the Aquatic and Aerobic schedules for class days and times.
