YMCA of Bristol Names Matthews Chief Executive Officer

Bristol, Tenn. — Following a nationwide search process, Richard “Rick” Matthews has been named as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the YMCA of Bristol. Matthews succeeds Chris Ayers, who will retire as CEO of the organization at the end of September.

A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with nearly two decades of Y-related experience, Matthews will guide the organization’s long-range plan of transitioning to a higher level of membership service, while overseeing program development, staff training and ongoing capital improvements.

“Rick brings a diverse skillset and extensive leadership experience to the YMCA of Bristol, along with a passion for service and commitment to the community,” says Dwight Owens, chief volunteer officer for the Bristol Y. “He is full of enthusiasm and has a proven track record of success throughout his 19 years of service with the Y.”

Matthews comes to Bristol after serving for 13 years as district vice president for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads in Chesapeake, Virginia. In this position, he had oversight of three family centers, a regional day camp, a budget of more than $10 million, and 10,000 membership units totaling 26,000 individuals.

In 2017, while also serving as executive director of the Suffolk Family YMCA in Suffolk, Virginia, Matthews managed a $3.2 million renovation of the organization’s Family Center. Under Matthews’ leadership, the Suffolk Family YMCA’s budget increased from $2.4 million to $4.4 million. He was also responsible for raising $1.25 million in new program grants and $1 million in new capital donations, all while overseeing an annual campaign of $400,000 throughout his district.

“I am truly honored and blessed to be selected as the next CEO of the YMCA of Bristol,” Matthews says. “I pledge to work tirelessly to uphold and build upon the great legacies and traditions the Bristol Y has established. The future is bright, and I look forward to working with the amazing group of Y staff members, board of directors, community partners, local government leaders and others who are dedicated to positively impacting lives in the Bristol community for many, many years to come.”

Matthews’ additional experience with the Y includes serving as center executive director for a number of Y locations, including the Central Florida YMCA in Orlando, the YMCA of Greater St. Louis, and the YMCA of Greater Mobile.

“After 16 years as CEO of the YMCA of Bristol and 35 years as a Y professional, I am excited to pass the torch onto Rick,” Ayers says. “He will be a great asset to our YMCA, and will continue the 134-year tradition of leading our Y in meeting the ever-changing needs of our community. I have no doubt that Rick’s skills and experience will move our Y to even greater heights.”

Matthews earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from the University of Maryland in College Park.

Key Deliverables:
Implement the Strategic Plan: The ability to work effectively with the board of directors, volunteers, community leaders and key staff to deliver on the critical community needs and implement the strategic roadmap focused on organizational strategies. Lead staff through the implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Fiscal Management: Ensure the Y’s financial resources are properly managed and report on its financial position. Empower and guide staff to lead their departments and monitor and meet budgets. Develop and implement stewardship strategies including building the endowment and planned giving programs.  Key competencies: decision making, project management, finance, quality results, functional expertise, developing others
Improve Operating Performance: Partner with the board to identify issues and develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives to solve them. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and be able to quickly address issues that arise as well as forecast future needs. Ensure the Y’s financial resources are properly managed and report on its financial position. Use high-level financial analysis to forecast trends, growth, and stability while consistently leading the Y to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Determine new and creative ways to promote the YMCA through effective marketing and communications and create an annual calendar with measurables action plans to address the Ys needs.  Key competencies: communication, influence, quality results, finance, decision making

Salary Range: $75,000 – $95,000 commensurate with experience.
Residency Expectation: Living in the YMCA’s service area is required.

Minimum Criteria for Candidates:
1. Accredited 4-year college degree.
2. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
3. Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:
1. YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (obtain within 3 years).
2. Fiscally sound business management approach.
3. Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
4. A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management.

YMCA of Bristol Association Facts:
The YMCA of Bristol is a long standing and well-respected organization in the community. It is the largest health and wellness facility in the community serving almost 10,000 community members each year. Programs includes; swim lessons, summer camp, after school, group exercise programs and youth sports. The Y also has a very strong teen program, special needs partnership and summer reading program.
The Association was chartered in 1884 with a store front facility in Bristol until 1907. In 1907, a magnificent four-story building was built that consisted of a pool, gym, bowling alley, hotel rooms and meeting rooms. In 1968, the current facility was built. At the time it was one of the finest
YMCA buildings in the country. Since 2006, the building has been under renovations. Currently, 90% of the building has been renovated while incurring NO DEBT.
Over 3.5 million has been raised and invested in the YMCA of Bristol over the past 15 years. The last capital project for the Y was in 1989 to add a second indoor pool and women’s health center, around $500,000 was raised and the same amount in debt. In 2000, the Y purchased an outdoor pool.

Financial Position:
$1.6M budget size (82% from membership, 10% from programs, 8% from contribution and grants and 1% from others). $1.7M in endowment and a balanced budget of the last 15 years. Over $300K in operating and reserve funds. All debt was retired in 2002 through the donation of a very supportive individual.

The Y Encourages Older Adults to “Engage at Every Age” This May

You are never too old to eat healthy, get active and social

BRISTOL TN/VA, May 14 – May is Older Americans Month and the YMCA OF BRISTOL is emphasizing the importance of being active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. Bristol TN/VA residents are encouraged to “Engage at Every Age,” developing behaviors that are crucial to healthy aging, including healthy eating, increasing physical activity and social interaction—especially those adults over 50.

Adults 50 years and older currently make up more than 30 percent of the U.S. population, and will soon represent 45 percent of all Americans. Here in Bristol TN/VA adults 65 and older make up 19 percent of the population. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that adults 50 and older have a 70 percent chance of developing at least one chronic disease. While these numbers seem daunting, the good news is that making small lifestyle changes that include increasing physical activity, eating healthier and staying active socially can help older adults live better.

“You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental and emotion well-being,” said Sandra Booher, Active Older Adults (AOA) Coordinator, YMCA OF BRISTOL. “If you need help, support or just a place to get started, community-based organizations like the Y provide the needed guidance to help older adults age well.”

The Y offers many ways for older adults to live healthier including

The YMCA OF BRISTOL offers many older adult swim programs that help increase physical activity and improve health. These programs provide opportunities for individuals to begin or continue an exercise routine in an environment that provides resistance, as well as buoyancy, which helps reduces stress on joints when compared to other physical activities like running.

While the CDC recommends that older adults get a minimum 30 minutes of moderate exercise or strength training per day, less than one out of three of American’s 65 and older meet these guidelines. Swimming and aquatic programs may reduce the risk of muscle loss as one ages and reduce the risk of osteoporosis as well as improve cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and mental well-being.

The YMCA OF BRISTOL has 15 weekly adult swim programs that welcome older populations, engaging 15,000 people each year.

Additionally, the Y offers the following tips on how to jump-start your healthy-living routine:

 

  1. Have fun with your food. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring! Have fun with your fruits and vegetables by trying them fresh or frozen. Find a new recipe that uses a different source of protein or find a way to incorporate fish or beans into an old favorite. Remember as you age, it’s important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy and lean meats to help your body get the necessary nutrients.

 

  1. Fill up on fiber and potassium, hold the salt. As you age, your body needs more fiber rich foods to help it stay regular. Aim for a variety of colorful foods on your plate (i.e. fruits and veggies) to keep fiber rich foods a part of your diet. Additionally, increasing potassium along with reducing sodium or salt may lower your risk of high blood pressure. Fruits, vegetables and low-fat or fat-free milk and yogurt are good sources of potassium.

 

  1. Get Active. Physical activity is safe for almost everyone, and the health far outweigh the risks. Regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do for their health. It can prevent many of the health problems that seem to come with age (such as osteoporosis and arthritis) and reduce the risk for developing, or help manage, depression, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain kinds of cancers. For older adults who have chronic conditions that hinder their ability to be active on a regular basis, some physical activity is better than none, and older adults who participant in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits.

 

  1. Tweak your routine. To get the recommended 30 minutes of daily physical activity, change your routine to 10-minute sessions throughout the day. For example, stand on one foot while brushing your teeth to increase balance, and do squats while washing dishes to increase strength. Make sure you can grab hold of something to maintain balance—safety first! To increase your cardio, take the stairs instead of the elevator or park farther from the entrance to work. When sitting in front of the TV, march during commercials or do some light stretching to break up sitting for long periods.

 

  1. Get social. Socialization is an important part of aging. As we get older, it’s important to be active socially to stay healthy. Take a walk with a friend or a neighbor, join a book club or volunteer at your local pet shelter or local Y. Social interaction provides meaningful engagement, builds relationships, enhances a sense of belonging and provides opportunities for involvement—all resulting in greater bonds and a stronger sense of community. Being connected to the community keeps you healthy!

YMCA OF BRISTOL Swim Lessons Create Strong Swimmers and Confident Kids

Lessons help swimmers of all ages and skills develop a lifelong love of swimming

BRISTOL TN/VA, May 7 – May is National Water Safety Month, and the perfect time to get children involved in swim lessons. As America’s Swim Instructor, the Y is the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming—teaching more than one million kids a year swimming and water safety skills.

This year, the YMCA OF BRISTOL updated its lessons to increase the accessibility and enjoyment of swimming to all ages and skill levels. The latest evolution of Y Swim Lessons accommodates varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers’ progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow more easily to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.

“ALL children, regardless of background, skills or age, should have access to swim lessons,” said Suzanne Wantland, Healthy Living Director, YMCA OF BRISTOL. “It’s a rite of passage that can lead to a love of swimming that lasts a lifetime, while increasing confidence, physical activity and well-being.”

There are three general categories of Y Swim Lessons

  • Swim Starters develops water enrichment and aquatic readiness in children ages 6 months to 3 years. This category focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies.
  • Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.
  • Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

The Y introduced the concept of group swim lessons in 1909. Now, each year in more than 2,000 pools across the country, the Y teaches more than a million children from all backgrounds invaluable water safety and swim skills.
